Would you work for free for a month to keep your employer in business? This is is exactly what British Airways staff have been asked amidst financial difficulties for the airline. I have head of companies asking people to take voluntary sabbaticals to ease a few months of SR&A but not to work for nothing.
I am sure that this request has put many BA employees in a corner…with UK unemployment being at a 12 year high leading to few choices outside surely you need to put your trust in the survival of BA and to make every effort to keep it a float for the sake of long term job prospects – which means a little bit of ‘free’ lancing.
What would you do if you were put in the same situation? I think that despite my Gen-Y altruistic nature, I would find it hard to work for free. I would take unpaid leave like a shot but I would not be able to work for free whilst someone else was reaping the return – the shareholders. I am presuming that last year when BA was in profit then the employees didn’t all receive pay rises!
I work in a massive corporation and so distant from the profit that I know I couldn’t do this for the reason mentioned above – but how about small companies that people have an emotional connection with? what about start up businesses? freelance work? Would you do it all for free?
