Do the Mafia still deal in $?

I am so surprised that this news story that I read on Bloomberg this morning has not really been picked up on my international media nor bloggers.

On June 4, 2 Japanese men were detained trying to pass from Italy to Switzerland with $134 billion of US bonds.

Yes, you read it correctly $134 BILLION.

To put it into perspective, that is the GDP of New Zealand or 3 Beijing Olympics (yes, including the fireworks) concealed in the bottom of a suitcase. That is mental.

So are they real or are they fake? To be honest, no one seems to know yet. And if they are real, will the US confirm it publically or claim that they are fakes. If they are fakes the story disappears quickly, if real it blows into an international situation throwing some more trust out of international relations.

William Pesek has had some fun framing some conspiracies around the news report:

Are these would-be smugglers agents of Kim Jong Il stashing North Korea’s cash in a Swiss vault? Bagmen for Nigerian Internet scammers? Was the money meant for terrorists looking to buy nuclear warheads? Is Japan dumping its dollars secretly?

Do you have any more?

Hmm… very very interesting!

That is a lot of “money” moving around – was it physical movement of “a document”? Seems a touch stupid to get aroung with literally a ticking timebomb!
